Every claim, matched to a certificate

We match each renewable claim to the certificates retired for it.

Length
3 weeks
Price, indicative
From $2,500 for one reporting year

EPA says a REC is issued when one megawatt-hour of renewable electricity is generated and delivered to the grid. A claim can be no larger than the certificates retired for it. We count them.

Three weeks, claim by claim

  1. Week 1

    Collect claims and records

Every renewable sentence in your report, website and investor deck, plus retirement records and the year’s load.

  2. Week 2

    Match the numbers

MWh retired against MWh used, by vintage, by site and by the period each claim covers.

  3. Week 3

    Mark up and explain

Each claim marked supported, narrower or unsupported, with suggested wording, then a 45-minute call.

What lands on your desk

Who it is for
Any company publishing renewable electricity claims, one reporting year
Format
Remote review, marked-up claims and a 45-minute call
  • A claims register: every renewable statement, where it appears and what it asserts
  • A match sheet setting MWh retired against MWh used, by site, period and vintage
  • Each claim marked supported, narrower than written or unsupported, with the reason
  • Suggested wording that says only what the certificates support
  • A list of claims to send to your counsel before the next publication

Where this program fits

A fit when

  • Your report or website says your sites run on renewable electricity
  • Investors or lenders are asking what backs a renewable claim
  • You buy RECs, green tariff service or community solar and have never matched the records
  • A new report goes out this year and someone wants it checked first

Not a fit when

  • You need a legal opinion on advertising or securities rules; that is counsel’s work
  • You have no renewable purchases yet; start with the Green Options Study

Example: a credit union with 20 branches

Example engagement, figures illustrative

A credit union says on its website and in its annual report that its 20 branches run on renewable electricity. The check finds certificates retired for about 3,000 MWh against about 4,000 MWh of branch load, and one block of RECs from an earlier vintage than the year claimed. Two new branches were never added to the purchase.

Questions about Clean Claims Check

Is this legal advice?

No. We check the energy facts behind a claim: how many MWh, which certificates, what vintage, which sites. Whether wording meets advertising or securities rules is a legal question, so we flag those claims for your counsel and work alongside them where you ask us to.

What records do you need?

The text of each claim, the retirement records or attestations for the certificates behind it, and the year’s electric use by site. Retirement records usually come from a tracking registry, such as WREGIS in the western United States, or from the seller. If any are missing, we say which to request.

Why does vintage matter?

A certificate records when its megawatt-hour was generated. A claim about one year’s electricity is normally expected to rest on certificates generated close to that period, so older RECs can leave a claim short even when the totals match. We show the vintage of every block against each claim.

Can you check claims from a green tariff or community solar?

Yes. The question is who holds and retires the certificates. Some programs retire them on the customer’s behalf; others keep or sell them. We read the program terms and the records you received, then say which part of your load a claim can cover.
